News from Pacifica/Daly City Democrats

At the Pacifica/Daly City Democrats meeting on August 16, Joshua Cosgrove delivered excellent advice and a thorough summation of the North Coast County Water District’s (NCCWD) plan to help us survive the current drought. All of us need to be water conservation ambassadors. Climate change and population growth affect our water usage. It is predicted that temperatures will increase 3-5 degrees in the next 10 years. This means less snowfall. Snow packs will melt earlier. It is expected that 12 million more people will be living in California in the next 30 years. With more people in the state of California, there will be an increase in demand for water. Thus, we must have sustainable policies.

The Governor declared a drought emergency in January 2014. The NCCWD has requested a voluntary 20 percent reduction in water usage, 45 gallons of water per day is the goal for inside usage, and 60-70 gallons of water per day for outside usage. This outside usage is where we can save water. Thus, brown is beautiful both for cars and lawns. Drought tolerant plants and rocks make for a water conservation garden. People can contact NCCWD for a dollar per square foot rebate which is explained in their flyer: Lawn Be Gone.

The next meeting of the Pacifica/Daly City Democrats is September 20 at the Sharp Park Golf Course Restaurant. The featured speaker is David Buruto, chair of the San Mateo County Democrats Central Committee (SMCDCC). Doors open at 9 a.m. The meeting starts at 9:45 a.m. Breakfast is available for $12, continental breakfast is $6. This meeting is open to the public. You do not need to be a member of the club to attend. RSVP Joan Putz at jdabbles@gmail.com.

Docent Training Announced

On October 11 and 18, the San Mateo County Historical Association will conduct its annual docent training for its three sites — the San Mateo County History Museum, the Sanchez Adobe historic house in Pacifica and the Woodside Store in Woodside.

The program is free. Once the volunteers are trained to be docents, they have a choice of conducting scheduled tours for children and/or adults or interpreting local history for general visitors to the sites.

Speakers will include association staff, experienced docents and Dr. Mark Still, Ph.D. of the College of San Mateo. Topics of the training will include the lifeways of the Ohlone Indians, Spanish out-posts on the Peninsula, Mexican ranchos, early American pioneers, San Mateo County immigration history, local entrepreneurs, suburbanization and instruction on how to communicate with the public.

Tours of all three sites will be part of the orientation.

Last school year, 20,000 students and their adult chaperons visited the association’s sites. Thus, there is a heavy need for docent volunteers. Those interested can call 650-299-0104, Ex 233, or go to education@historysmc.org.
