The history of the Joe DiMaggio League World Series is filled with great games and great players. Some of those players worked hard enough to play in the Major Leagues.
So, there is a chance that a future Major League ballplayer could be on the field at Half Moon Bay High School for the eight-team Joe DiMaggio League World Series.
Half Moon Bay, the host team, plays the first game of the double-elimination tournament, at 9 a.m., Saturday against Daly City, the winner of the San Francisco League.
“I am expecting to play some really strong teams,” said Half Moon Bay’s Sam Vaughn.
Half Moon Bay enters the tournament with a very respectable 14-8 record. Half Moon Bay’s regular season ended on July 14 with a 2-1 loss to Pacifica.
Since then, Half Moon Bay has been practicing, getting ready for the tournament. It’s the first time in the 47-year history of the tournament that it’s not taking place at the well-known Cleve Borman Field at the Veteran’s Home of California in Yountville.
“This field is great,” said Half Moon Bay player Morgan Drobnick. “It means a lot to have the tournament here.”
Half Moon Bay is one of four San Mateo County teams participating in the tournament. One team is based in San Francisco and the rest come from the North Bay.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said player Peter Bacich. “I’m not nervous at all.”
According to Joe DiMaggio League historians, nearly 50 league players made it to the Major Leagues, including Half Moon Bay resident Eric Brynes.
